Free · nature

The valley's river, the region's natural swimming hole for generations. In November the water is cool: more of a riverbank, rocks-and-cooler outing than a swim.

After heavy rain in the Sierra the river rises and clouds within hours: that day, watch it from the bank.

Matacanes · Chipitín · Potrero Redondo

In the Santiago mountains: canyoning, rappelling, pool jumps and caves. Only with a certified operator and booked ahead; they're full-day outings and not for small children. Horseback rides are available in Santiago too.

What to eat in the valley

Orange, cabrito and burnt-milk ice cream.

  • Roadside orangeade. At the Carretera Nacional stalls, squeezed on the spot without extra sugar. From November to March there's fresh-cut orange, mandarin and grapefruit; take home citrus preserves.
  • Cabrito and carne asada. Allende and Santiago are cabrito country; in Montemorelos and on the road to Rayones, the roadside fondas.
  • Burnt-milk ice cream. At the ice cream shops on Montemorelos' main square. The orange one is only made when there's real orange in the valley.
  • Glorias from Linares. Burnt-milk candy with pecans; the gift you bring back from the day trip.

Three days with kids

A plan you'll actually follow.

  1. 1
Saturday. Arrive from 3:00 pm (the house and pool are readied that morning). Pool, lake and hammocks until the sun goes down; carne asada on the terrace and a fire by the pit.
  2. 2
Sunday. Bioparque Estrella from opening (10:00) to mid-afternoon. On the way back, ice cream on Montemorelos' square and, if the fair is on, a stop at Ecoparque El Pilón. Fireplace at night.
  3. 3
Monday. An early walk or row in the valley fog. Check out with a stop at an orange stall on the Carretera Nacional; with time to spare, Cola de Caballo is on the way to Monterrey (a 20-minute detour).

With teens or adults only: swap Sunday for Cola de Caballo + Villa de Santiago, or for Rayones if you want mountains.
